Downers Grove is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, founded in 1832 by Pierce Downer and incorporated in 1873. The 2020 census counted 50,247 residents. It is a west-southwestern suburb of Chicago, about 20 miles west of the Loop, between I-88 and I-55. ZIP codes are 60515, 60516, and 60517. The 2010 census put the land area at 14.31 square miles.
Downtown and the housing mix
Housing near the center includes houses from the middle of the 19th century, and later generations of houses stand through the village. The Tivoli Theatre, built in 1928 with an original seating capacity of 1,390, was the first theatre in DuPage County to show talkies.
Getting around
Metra’s BNSF Line stops at Belmont Road, Main Street, and Fairview Avenue. Interstate 355 and Interstate 88 pass through the community, and Ogden Avenue is U.S. 34. The Grove Commuter Shuttle runs routes to two of the three village stations. Pace provides suburban bus service.
Parks and trees
Lyman Woods is a nature preserve of oak savanna, prairie, and marsh, about 150 acres, purchased by the village in 1987. Maple Grove Forest Preserve is inside the town. Hidden Lake Forest Preserve covers 360 acres and includes a pond with access to the East Branch of the DuPage River. The National Arbor Day Foundation has named Downers Grove a Tree City USA.
